That is the substance that was all over my lils' clothing and hair on Friday (we were able to at least wash it off of our hands/arms)! OOPS! However, it should have washed off of their clothes pretty easily. Oobleck is simply 1 part water to 2 parts cornstarch and a little food coloring for a fun twist. Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid which means it acts like a liquid when poured, but like a solid when a force acts upon it (like when you punch your fingers in it). Pretty neat stuff! It complimented the end of our matter chapter in science since it takes on the properties of both a solid and liquid.<br />
<br />
First, we watched a youtube video of two Spanish talk show hosts walking (more like running!) across a pool of oobleck! <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHlAcASsf6U" target="_blank">Go here to watch the video</a>... or watch it on here (hopefully this works!).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/yHlAcASsf6U?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Their little minds were blown! They kept asking, "What?! How are they doing that? What is that stuff?"<br />
<br />
Then, I explained what was in the pool and that we were going to make it. Of course, their next question was, "Are we going to run across it too?!" I had to break it to them that I did not buy enough cornstarch to make a pool of oobleck... "awwwww....."<br />
<br />
I made a batch underneath the document camera so that it projected on the SmartBoard for all to see. Next, I made two more batches of the stuff in big plastic containers (the kind that you put shoes in and slide under the bed). I split up the class into two groups of 11 and let them stick their hands in the ooey, gooey mixture. Needless to say, things got a bit messy... I <strike>forgot</strike> did not take pictures of the kids experiencing the oobleck, but here are some pictures of the ingredients I used and me playing with the original oobleck batch in case you have never seen it before.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought the cheapest brand of cornstarch. :)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
If you look closely, you can see that the cornstarch package exploded all over the document camera and the cart... oops! </div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hard/solid-like when I try to grab it. I'm using all of my finger muscles(?) here.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKQAXupNVSpsJXMqaduXiTZ_uT_4YvtUHiRsYcROyM-ylzo6reNp6A8xbktnw5yjaYT6Sc_0oCgOvON6SY-o5J5CH7dTwwfnynEnz7aU9QjpBH1BYPHT2Ots6XgveSk5EczIhQmwFRMK0/s1600/100_2493.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKQAXupNVSpsJXMqaduXiTZ_uT_4YvtUHiRsYcROyM-ylzo6reNp6A8xbktnw5yjaYT6Sc_0oCgOvON6SY-o5J5CH7dTwwfnynEnz7aU9QjpBH1BYPHT2Ots6XgveSk5EczIhQmwFRMK0/s400/100_2493.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, I was able to pick up a chunk, but alas, it instantly turned into liquid...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbW-S49io_GHKDpL-2pD28XoivtDle_JDRxPxOs4VOb1A58MLRJmx07S2UNDiIxDHVlDEwq873wESewZUyjjUIFjeIq5w-lRGYRg7F5tWHd9-LRlyGU_A2IdSi1n7Zb0w7Kq62oF27nqE/s1600/100_2496.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbW-S49io_GHKDpL-2pD28XoivtDle_JDRxPxOs4VOb1A58MLRJmx07S2UNDiIxDHVlDEwq873wESewZUyjjUIFjeIq5w-lRGYRg7F5tWHd9-LRlyGU_A2IdSi1n7Zb0w7Kq62oF27nqE/s400/100_2496.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back into the bowl it went!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So, if you would like to make this in your classroom, it is super easy, but can get messy. I would lay down a beach towel or old plastic shower curtain, something that you can easily clean up after all of the fun is over. That is the lesson I learned from this little activity, so I am passing on my new knowledge to you! :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Now, onto our little Halloween Party flashback! First of all, thank you so much to my homeroom mom and all of the moms and grandmother who came to help out! I do not know what I would do without you all. Here is a picture tour of the Halloween station games/activities that we enjoyed that day....</div>

Well, that should do it for now! It is off to bed for me. After a day of making a rare appearance at the gym, laundry, figuring out how to renew my passport so I can go on our honeymoon in June, and working on my research study paper for my grad class, my brain has had enough. I hope you all have a great week! One more week and a few days until a lil Thanksgiving break! :)</div>

The jar was sitting on our blue round table when we left for lunch, and when we returned from recess, it was GONE! The bandit had taken it and left a note and a clue in its place. Can you believe that?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5S9ncVTFNeYYaBK_MIDH1mbOcvGVCeFWxVWIcqHQAkj1B6C322st1G3_29pXL2lgcH_Xqpcze4VoOuF0oVMRZ6GcFMYYyJ16BXB-vcHETwJtvLpuZANlLEP_zk4dWuURU8GdUGafNgAQ/s1600/100_2457.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5S9ncVTFNeYYaBK_MIDH1mbOcvGVCeFWxVWIcqHQAkj1B6C322st1G3_29pXL2lgcH_Xqpcze4VoOuF0oVMRZ6GcFMYYyJ16BXB-vcHETwJtvLpuZANlLEP_zk4dWuURU8GdUGafNgAQ/s400/100_2457.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We were quite upset and shocked that someone had taken our candy. Before going on our search, we made some predictions as to WHO we thought stole the candy and WHERE it was hidden. Once our predictions were stated, we tiptoed down the hall toward our first destination. You see, our first clue said to look in the place where we eat a meal. Once we found our second clue under a cafeteria table, we were off again! The bandit's clues led us to the gym, playground, library, and then back to our classroom, where we found the last clue and our jar of candy corn (thank goodness!).<br />

The lils were really into the whole adventure. They were curious as to WHO took their candy and were intent on finding it. I want to extend a BIG thanks to Babbling Abby for providing this awesome activity<br />
<br />
We enjoyed our candy corn at the end of the day and still have more left! I'm sure we will continue to enjoy it until the BIG DAY on Thursday. Oh, the excitement is building, for sure! Don't worry, there will be a post recapping all of the spooktacular Halloween activities! ;)<br />

Anywho, before it turned into a month since my last post, I wanted to pass along another idea from Mrs. Cara Carroll... :) found <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/search/label/Mystery%20Messages" target="_blank">HERE</a><br />
<br />
So, borrowing her idea of our story characters writing math problem letters to the lils, the first letter <strike>I</strike> Curious George wrote to the class was a HUGE hit! First of all, they were so incredibly excited to get mail, and I mean, who doesn't get excited about actual paper mail?! I ALWAYS get super excited to get fun mail, like a card or invite. It's the little things. Okay, tangent, back to the main idea here. So, I typed up a letter (using CCFonts!) from Curious George that included a problem for the students to solve. Then, they had to write back to Curious George with their answer. For the first two letters, I wrote what they told me to model letter writing. For future letters, I will turn over the letter writing to the lils, now that they have an idea of how to do it. I did not write a letter last week, and they were so disappointed about not getting mail! Aww! I will have to make sure to do it this week. Thank you Mrs. Carroll for such a great idea that combines literacy and math in such a fun, engaging way! You can really cover any skill!<br />
<br />
I forgot to take pictures of the Curious George letter, so this is from Lucia, a character from another story in our Journeys curriculum. You can even see that during our Writer's Workshop, some students wrote their own letters back to Lucia! How cute! Some asked if she could come to their homes to play! :)<br />

Sorry I've been MIB (missing in blogging) lately. Hopefully, I can get it together soon and blog more often. I really do miss sharing AND reading other blogs (My blogger is at over 100 blog posts waiting for me to read! ahhhh! I'm missing out on so much!). Okay, way past my bedtime. Good night and until next time!<br />

It's false. I mean, yes, words will not actually break your bones, but they DO hurt. When I found this little think before you speak activity on Cara Carroll's blog <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/2013/09/i-survived-week-2-how-about-you.html" target="_blank">HERE</a> (at the bottom of her post), I was thrilled. Sometimes kids know exactly what they are saying, but sometimes they do not realize the hurtfulness of their words. This touching lesson really makes the lils think about their words.<br />
I began by telling them the sticks and stones saying. Some had heard of it, but most had not. I explained what it meant, and we discussed how mean words can hurt our feelings. They all said they have experienced hurtful words... :/ Then, I explained that we were going to read the story <u>Chrysanthemum</u> by Kevin Henkes and gave a short summary, describing how the other characters are going to make fun of Chrysanthemum's name. Earlier, I had cut out a BIG heart from red bulletin board paper. I told the lils that we were going to crinkle and crumple up the heart each time someone in the story made fun of Chrysanthemum. As I read, we passed the heart around and crumpled it up for each hurtful word. They were amazed at how wrinkled it was becoming! Then, at the end of the story, the characters start to say kind things about her name. We tried our best to smooth out the wrinkles but to no avail. One lil was actually pretty upset that he was unable to straighten out the wrinkles... aww!! We discussed that even though the other students started being nice to Chrysanthemum, her heart was still wrinkled from their unkind words. To end the activity, we wrote our names on band aids (pen worked best on the fabric band aids) to try to help heal Chrysanthemum's heart AND as a little pledge to think before we speak. <br />

<br />
This was such a beautiful lesson. My lils really took it to heart, pun intended. ;) As they were patching up the heart with their band aids, I heard them say, "Let's help her!" and "Let's make her feel better!" So sweet! I will hang to heart in the room as our visual reminder to think before we speak.<br />
<br />
Oh ps, the Writer's Workshop presentation went SO well!! I talked a mile a minute, but I just had so much to share! I love spreading the word about all of the blogs that I follow and all of the ideas on pinterest. Hopefully, the grad students will follow my advice and get into teacher blog reading. It seriously changed my life. And I shamelessly plugged my lil blog (ahh blush!) haha, so if you are one of those grad students, HELLO and welcome to my lil world! :) <br />

Well my goal of posting earlier was hindered by a few things: Open House on Thursday (went well! whew!), being asked by my grad school professor to present my Writer's Workshop to his Teaching Writing class tomorrow (yikes! nervousssss!), and researching for and <strike>writing</strike> my grad school research paper due Tuesday (will be working more on that tomorrow... at some point...). Seriously, God bless all of you who have children to take care of on top of all of these things. I deeply respect you and only hope that I will have your strength some day in the far future when I have lils of my own (oh gees, cold sweats... on thing at a time... let's get married first!). Oh that is the other thing, my fiance and I have been planning for our wedding on April 26th, 2014!!!! Ahhh excited! We made and ordered our save the date magnets (they are en route!) and gathered addresses over the weekend. But I have missed my lil blog and sharing with all of you so without further ado, here is a lesson I learned 2 weeks ago during center time...<br />
<br />
So two weeks ago, we were learning the short i sound. I thought it would be fun to make a fishing game for center time. I made orange paper fish, wrote a spelling word on each fish, laminated them, and stuck a paper clip on each fish. Then, I made the fishing poles with leftover wooden dowel rods from my wedding center pieces, taped clear plastic "fishing line" to the dowel rods, and taped magnets to the ends of the lines. I was so thrilled with the outcome and ready to go! Well this happened in the middle of center time, which was already a half hour delayed due to a boy-only boy scout assembly that morning, so we were a little rushed to finish our centers before music class.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Holy tangled mess!!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCE5sGaUDVkpp1en1tYWkMdQFGPVj2AtbO4i842T4MSSa-HMcDA5LTPOxh7THKm7zGq06SZs4tgky-trB0w6duYpbGZJm99bVI_SEYEOqN5GyYDbjmqW1ap9L0OHzKTat-f3lAE75iAI/s1600/100_2373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCE5sGaUDVkpp1en1tYWkMdQFGPVj2AtbO4i842T4MSSa-HMcDA5LTPOxh7THKm7zGq06SZs4tgky-trB0w6duYpbGZJm99bVI_SEYEOqN5GyYDbjmqW1ap9L0OHzKTat-f3lAE75iAI/s400/100_2373.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not even sure how all of these tangles and knots were possible... Untangling was futile. I was in the middle of running a short i Bingo center. As I called out short i words for my group, I cut the lines from the rods and magnets and reattached everything with brown yarn instead. Not as authentic looking, but A LOT easier to untangle AND not get tangled in the first place. I had 5 rods in all to reassemble. I was a sweaty mess when all was said and done! So lesson learned, go for practicality over authenticity next time. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This center was a BIG hit! I set out these silly sentence puzzle pieces (don't remember where I bought them!) for the kiddos to choose a beginning, middle, and end puzzle piece. Then, they had to record the sentence and illustrate it. While they were recording the sentences, they had to remember to begin with a capital and end with punctuation. This was great practice for writing complete sentences. At the end of the day, we had a few extra moments (say what!?), so I had the students, who wanted to share, read their silly sentences. We all had a good laugh! :)</div>

While I'm on a roll and still awake from that grande mocha earlier, I might as well tell you about last week's short o learning and centers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We began by completing a short o picture to word match that I made in our groups. Then, we played a <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/I-Have-Who-Has-Short-O-Words-392702" target="_blank">short o I Have Who Has game</a>. Next, I had the kiddos give me a short o word to add to our anchor chart that will stay up all year. Can you tell we live in Pittsburgh and love our Penguins' star?? ;)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This Scrabble Spelling center (I think it was a freebie on a blog and I can't remember where I got it :/ sorry!) was a perfect literacy and math connection activity. The lils had to spell their words on the left and then use the amounts on the scrabble tiles to add up the total of each word. We have been learning all about addition in math class, so this center was excellent practice for us. I had the counters out for anyone who needed to use them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This center (using the blue monster lunch bags from the Target Dollar Spot donation!) was called Monster Chomp. I created this one. The students had to sort through short vowel word cards. The blue monster ONLY eats short o words, so the lils put the short o words in the monster bag. They placed the other short vowel words in another bucket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lastly, they dumped out all of the short o words and recorded them on the Monster Chomp worksheet for the monster on the sheet to grab and eat! YUM!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, I made this center for the kiddos to practice spelling and using the vocabulary words for the week. First, they had to choose four out of the six vocab words to record on the left. Then, they used the large amount of letter stickers to spell out each word. Lastly, the kiddos had to write a sentence using each word they chose.</div>

I'm serious! So far my lils have been pretty good at following the rules, but this week, they were a bit crazy pants!! I had some shouting out... coming up to me when they know they need to stay in their seats and raise their hands... getting wild during centers... and other such random (unique) things that happened haha! They should be back to normal next week. I'm probably overreacting anyway since they spoil me with their normally awesome behavior! :)<br />
<br />
Anywho, so far we have studied the short a and i vowels. I love to make big visuals for the lils to use as resources or reminders when they are reading and writing. First, we do some activities to review the vowel sound, such as the <a href="http://firstgraderatlast.blogspot.com/2012/10/this-is-scraggle.html" target="_blank">Scraggles activities</a> from my last post. Then, I have each of the kiddos give me a short vowel word (using the vowel sound we are working with) to go on an anchor chart that stays up all year. Lastly, the kids will make a little craft to go on a BIG visual that stays up for about 2 months. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Okay! So here is the short a anchor chart! I added a lil <a href="http://firstgraderatlast.blogspot.com/2012/10/this-is-scraggle.html" target="_blank">Scraggle</a> to the chart as another reminder of the vowel sound. Again, all of the words on the chart were given to me by the kiddos.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeseupIX8uzCxbHXYZwwMUm6gfUEuNNupJ-pGfNBFpL5J5wl0BNkkpnPrk37gncPiww5uHAyy4I4_KJ5Undq-Tp90fPf3xK1GSRNiWc07o9PesKsNTyveh_JfH5Fu6a0EgT7krlWTs3gs/s1600/100_2358.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeseupIX8uzCxbHXYZwwMUm6gfUEuNNupJ-pGfNBFpL5J5wl0BNkkpnPrk37gncPiww5uHAyy4I4_KJ5Undq-Tp90fPf3xK1GSRNiWc07o9PesKsNTyveh_JfH5Fu6a0EgT7krlWTs3gs/s400/100_2358.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="text-align: center;">And here is the BIG visual. I have a wall full of windows in my room, and they face the main parking lot/ bus pickup and drop off area. This is where the BIG visuals will be hung, so everyone will know what is going on in first grade (and see that we just flat out rock!). I think I found these apple cutouts in the Michael's dollar section at the end of last year. The kids each got one and wrote a short a word on it (in pencil first and then marker). </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To begin the short i activities, we read Gilbert Goldfish Wants a Pet by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by Bob Shea. Such a cute book! It has a bit of a surprise ending so this book would be great for predicting and making inferences as well.</div>

After reading the book, we came up with as many short i words as we could to fill Gilbert's fish bowl. This is the anchor chart that will stay up all year. </div>

Here is the BIG fish bowl on the window. I used the Die-Cut to make orange ovals, and I used the 1/3 fraction circle template for the tails. Again, they had to write a short i word on the fish body. <br />

This week we will focus on the short o sound. I plan on us making short o paper socks. They will draw and cut these out on their own. I will string yarn from one side of the window to the other and hang the socks from the yarn. I think it will look super cute, especially from the parking lot. ;)</div>

This week we were busy, busy making posters and projects to display in the hallway for Open House on this coming Thursday (yikes!). </div>

In Science, we have been learning about weather and the four seasons. We are lucky (?) to experience all four seasons in Pittsburgh, PA, so this lils had lots to tell me about the weather in each season when we made this anchor chart for our classroom. The next day, I had a student from each of the five groups pick a poster topic out of our magic hat. Now, since there are only 4 seasons, I added a "how clouds form" category since we have done a lot with clouds in this unit of study as well.</div>

Since I teach in a Catholic school, we study religion. To begin the year, we study the story of creation. I have a really old but beautifully illustrated story of creation book for children. We read it twice; they loved it so much! Again, each group chose a day of creation (2-6) out of the magic hat and created a poster depicting what was created on their day. I took care of day one and seven. :)</div>

Here is the Watermelon Math Sentence activity from <a href="http://firstgradeblueskies.blogspot.com/2013/09/watermelon-math-freebie.html" target="_blank">Jennifer at First Grade Blue Skies</a>. I ADORE this activity. It was the perfect thing to end our first math topic on understanding addition. It was a crazy week, and I did not have time to pre-cut everything, but I actually like the fact that the lils did the entire project themselves. To make the watermelon fruit, I told the kiddos to make a HUGE capital letter D using the edge of the paper as the edge of D. I LOVE how each one is different. Then, they used their planning sheet to figure out how many blue, yellow, and gray seeds they needed to draw and cut out to make 10 seeds in all. Lastly, they wrote out their addition sentence on the paper. (We fixed this lil one on the right once I realized there were 11 seeds... oopsie!)</div>

Sorry about the lack of blogging lately, but such is life. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir on that one! So anywho, we have been learning like crazy in first grade! We have a new reading series, Journeys, this year. Also, we are using the Voyages program to teach grammar. I basically use the Voyages lessons as my mini lesson for our Writer's Workshop. As for the Journeys program, there is so much involved that I am still trying to wrap my head around it all and decide what to use and how to plan out the week. So far, we have done the Back to School Review week and the first story, "What is a Pal?". We were able to do centers 3 times last week, but I feel like we didn't get enough practice with our comprehension strategy. I think things will run more smoothly once we have our procedures down pat, so hopefully that will help. We shall see. <br />
<br />
Here are some of the activities we did to learn about the short a vowel and to review in our centers.<br />
<br />
We used the super fun pack <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Scraggles-Short-Vowel-A-Scraggle-ific-Literacy-Activities-357705" target="_blank">Scraggles: Short Vowel A "Scraggle-ific" Literacy Activities</a> from the fabulous Sarah Cooley. I have a ton of her products and highly recommend checking out her <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Sarah-Cooley" target="_blank">store</a> on tpt and her blog <a href="http://firstgraderatlast.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">First Grader...at Last!</a> We learned all about these silly Scraggles who only have short a names and only like short a things. My lils thought they were hilarious! We made a HUGE list of short a names on the SmartBoard. Then, each kid chose a Scraggle, wrote a short a name on the Scraggle's shirt, and colored it with loads of bright colors. We even made a short a anchor chart, filling up the thought bubble of a Scraggle with short a words (forgot to take a picture of that one!).<br />

This center helped us review our vocabulary words. The kids had to sift through the sand, after explicit directions that we do not throw sand, to find the Popsicle sticks with vocab words written on them. Then, they had to use the words to build a house of sticks. This activity is from Reagan Tunstall's pack <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sight-Word-Stick-Centers-263115" target="_blank">Sight Word Stick Centers</a>. I love this pack because it is so versatile. You could use the multitude of activities for sight words and spelling words. All you need to get are Popsicle sticks. :)<br />

This center was easy peasy. All I did was post the spelling lists (We have a regular and a challenge list for the kiddos who ace their pretest.) and put out a bucket of foam letters. I got these letters from the foam puzzles in the Target Dollar Spot <3. The lils had to spell the words with the letters. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another no-hassle center. For this reading center, I set out the leveled readers bin and the phonics phones (made from PVC piping, idea found on pinterest of course!). The kiddos were able to freely choose right choice books and use the phonics phones to read to themselves. The phones magnify their voices so that they can better hear the blending of sounds as they read. It also gets them excited to read aloud because they think it's neato to hear their voices magnified in their ears! </div>

This highlighting center is from Abby Mullins' <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Short-A-Word-Work-Activities-170387" target="_blank">Short A Word Work Activities</a> pack. This is our Boggle Board (idea found on pinterest... :)). It doesn't necessarily work the same as the actual Boggle game. The kids can make words with any combination of letters on the board; the letters do not need to be touching. This center was a BIG hit! They loved the challenge of making the most real short a words. They were allowed to go to this center any time they were early finishers or had some free time. <br />

Now, drumroll please... I owe a BIG Thank You to the Mt. Nebo Target (in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and my good friend, Ryan. Let me explain. A few months ago, Ryan, an Executive Team Leader at Target, asked me if I would like to have, for free, all of the leftover back-to-school Dollar Spot items from his store as they switched out the section for the Halloween/Fall season. He knows of my <strike>addiction</strike> love of the Dollar Spot. I'm sure you can guess what I said... YES!!!!!!!!! I waited oh-so-patiently and last week (Monday), I get a text from him saying that there are 17, yes 17, boxes full of goodies ready for me to pick up! AHHH!!! Be still my heart! I kept it cool all day, not sure how, and later that evening my mom, dad, and I rode the van out to Mt. Nebo. We strategically packed the van with all 17 big boxes. The next morning you would have thought that Christmas came early when the teachers arrived and saw this....</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We still have about 10 boxes full of items after we packed up everything after 'shopping'! They will be stored away for safe keeping, and the toys will be used as Christmas gifts for the kiddos. Again, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to Ryan and the Mt. Nebo Target. They did not ask me to promote them or say anything at all. However, how could I not spread the word about their gracious donation!! I do not know if every Target does this, but it never hurts to ask! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, folks, that was my exciting week, and this one will be no less busy! I'm off to try to sleep... Sunday nights are tough for me... I think it's the anticipation of the week that keeps me up... and tonight I have my lil sister to think about as well. She turns 21 at midnight... oy vey haha! I know I'm not her mom, but she's my little sister so I still worry. Anddddd I know what being 21 is like... I was there about 5 years ago. Oy vey that feels like it was forever ago! I know I'm only 26, but I have lost my 21 year old energy already! And now I'm rambling... time for sleep (hopefully)!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have a great week everyone!</div>

Collaborate and Listen!Hello everyone!! Just a super quick post tonight. I absolutely love attention getters! I started using them last year after I found some real gems on pinterest. Then, I found a few more this past summer and was super excited to implement them this year. Some of my faves are:<br />
<br />
Teacher: All Set? Students: You Bet! (typing it does not exude the cuteness of how it sounds!)<br />
<br />
Teacher: Hocus Pocus Students: Everybody focus! <br />
<br />
Teacher: Red Robin... Students: YUM!<br />
<br />
and my absolute favorite right now (just taught this one on Thursday last week)....<br />
Teacher: STOP... Students: Collaborate and Listen!<br />
<br />
Yes, you are correct, straight from Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby!! This is my lils' favorite attention getter at the moment. They love rapping it back to me. It is hilarious and definitely makes my day every time we do it hahaha it's the little things! I even had one of my lils come up to me Thursday afternoon and ask "Miss Kearns is that Stop Collaborate and Listen from the song that goes Ice Ice Baby (as he half rapped/danced that last part!!)?" I smiled real big at his recognition of it and said, "Yes! How did you know that?!" He said it was in the movie Mr. Popper's Penguins! hahaha<br />
<br />
Here is where I got some of my attention getters: <a href="http://firstgradeflipflops.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-new-linky-on-classroom-management-and.html">http://firstgradeflipflops.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-new-linky-on-classroom-management-and.html</a> and Here: <a href="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d4/34/b3/d434b3de537d0964c8649497d996f3c4.jpg">http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d4/34/b3/d434b3de537d0964c8649497d996f3c4.jpg</a> (Sorry I don't have the blogger who made that!) <br />
<br />
What do you use to get your students' attention?<br />
<br />

What a week! There really is no tired like back to school tired! Aaaand I had a constant migraine from Monday through Friday, blahhh. So, needless to say, with an ice pack covering my face, I passed out pretty early Friday night. I'm feeling 110% better now, so let's do a lil recap of the first full week in first grade. It was full of learning and practicing procedures, reviewing our classroom rules (which the lils helped me make), and reviewing our letters and their sounds and our numbers and number words. Also, since my group of 22 were rockin' it, I decided to start Writer's Workshop already! They LOVE it and are doing so well, for the most part. There are always a few who need a little extra support at first, and that is a-okay! We'll get there. :) I introduced centers as well. About half of my group did center learning last year and were familiar with it, so that helped A LOT! But I must say, for our first go at centers, it went pretty darn well! They needed a lot of help and re-explanation of directions the first few rotations, but by the last two rotations, I was barely needed. Unfortunately, we were so engrossed in center time (and our bell system wasn't working) that we (I) lost track of time. Before I knew it our new music teacher was at the door ready for his class, and we hadn't even had our morning bathroom break or snack!! AHH! Luckily, he was cool with us taking the first few minutes of his class to use the bathroom and eat a quick pretzel stick! :) So anyways, in all of the craziness of our first center time, I some how found a few moments to snap some pics to show you.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We began by reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and putting the letters on the coconut tree as we said their sounds.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the <a href="http://firstgradeandfabulous.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Fishy Bubbles</a> game where we matched the lowercase fish with their matching uppercase letters in the bubbles in the aquarium. I linked the site where I got the game freebie, but no matter how hard I searched, I could not find the blog entry link where I got it from. Maybe you will have better luck. DeAnne is an amazing blogger (the second blog I ever found!) and she always has excellent freebies. :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is an ABC order center from the <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chicka-Chicka-BOOM-BOOM-Mini-Unit-Math-Alphabet-Centers-252033" target="_blank">Chicka Chicka Boom Boom</a> activity pack. Out of all five centers, this was the most difficult and required the majority of my attention. However, once I did one or two examples with each small group of students, they were able to do it on their own (for the most part ;)).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is another <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chicka-Chicka-BOOM-BOOM-Mini-Unit-Math-Alphabet-Centers-252033" target="_blank">Chicka Chicka Boom Boom</a> activity. The kids had to find the letter and circle its color, which made for a nice lil color word review as well! Mwahaha so sneaky! ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6wIf6LqfNsAWQZi1slbuPMceA9d6kEpAQ6BLgorjPtFX2Yi4rOgmXDD-oYmyhbkKJYXqUsdK4IEUJD3UodVSU24zaPzsihT67tZqgSYMGIYjSwSE_jnV4eXENZWL7sp6WbVIuc7VM_E/s1600/100_2306.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6wIf6LqfNsAWQZi1slbuPMceA9d6kEpAQ6BLgorjPtFX2Yi4rOgmXDD-oYmyhbkKJYXqUsdK4IEUJD3UodVSU24zaPzsihT67tZqgSYMGIYjSwSE_jnV4eXENZWL7sp6WbVIuc7VM_E/s400/100_2306.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For this <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chicka-Chicka-BOOM-BOOM-Mini-Unit-Math-Alphabet-Centers-252033" target="_blank">Chicka Chicka Boom Boom</a> center, the kiddos picked a card out of the basket and had to record the letter that came after the letter shown on the card.</div>

This <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chicka-Chicka-BOOM-BOOM-Mini-Unit-Math-Alphabet-Centers-252033" target="_blank">Chicka Chicka Boom Boom</a> center is very similar to the one above, but the cards are different. The kids chose a letter card out of the basket and wrote the letter that comes after it on their worksheets.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This week we also did some writing activities. The book on the left is from an idea found on Pinterest. First, we read No, David! and discussed all of the things David was doing wrong. Then, we reviewed our classroom rules and made a Yes, David! book where David followed our rules. The book on the right (which I cannot find the link for at the moment, sorry!) helped us to get to know each other better. The front side of the page had the students fill in clues about themselves and the back side of the page had the students write their names and draw a picture of themselves. After everyone turned in their pages, we went through the book as a class to guess who was who. Some they knew right away, and others were a bit more tricky.</div>

On top of all this, we did some other projects (busy busy!). To go along with Kerri B's <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Amazing-Alphabet-Activities-Pack-237306" target="_blank">Amazing Alphabet Activities</a> pack, we decided to spell our names with pictures that began with the same letters as those in our names. I was pretty impressed with their creativity. For those who needed some inspiration, I put up the alphabet cards on my document camera, which showed up on the SmartBoard. So blessed to have these tools to use, and trust me, I use them EVERY day. Here are the products of our Name Mystery Codes...</div>

And last but not least, I had each student choose a letter tile from our magic hat. They were given a large bubble letter of the letter they chose. They were instructed to fill their letters with drawings, magazine pictures, and/or clip art of pictures that began with the letter they chose. They also had to label everything that went on their letter. These turned out awesome too!</div>

Okay, so thanks for sticking with me all the way to the bottom of this long post! I'm off to watch a movie with the fiancee and enjoy the fact that tomorrow is Labor Day! Enjoy the day off all you fellow teachers and anyone else who has tomorrow off! :) I will be spending it doing grad school homework, but at least I can sleep in (I love my sleep!). Okay, goodnight!!</div>

Thank you everyone for all of the support and positivity towards my lil blog! I must admit that I was a little nervous to put it out there, but all of your views and support washed that nervousness away. Thank you again! My next step will be to get on Bloglovin!<br />
<br />
Okay, so how about that first week of school!? We technically did not have a full first week. My school does two half days, one Thursday and one Friday. Tomorrow starts our full first week of all day every day. That first week is tough to plan, for me at least, because I don't fully start my first grade curriculum yet. I do a week long review of letters and their sounds and a number and number words review in math. For the letter review I use the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (one of my personal faves, it's just so catchy!), and I just found this awesome Chicka Chicka pack to go with it. Grab yours here: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chicka-Chicka-BOOM-BOOM-Mini-Unit-Math-Alphabet-Centers-252033">http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chicka-Chicka-BOOM-BOOM-Mini-Unit-Math-Alphabet-Centers-252033</a> I already copied, laminated, and cut it all out so it's ready to go! Thank you Doodle Bugs Teaching for the unit. Also, I used this pack last year and will use it again and again. It is an alphabet review pack from the amazing Kerri B. Get yours here: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Amazing-Alphabet-Activities-Pack-237306">http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Amazing-Alphabet-Activities-Pack-237306</a> I'm noticing that I have a little bit less work this year because a lot of the packs that I am using are already copied and laminated! However, my fiancee was right when he said that I will find other things to make or buy haha he knows me too well. ;) Anyways, back to Kerri B! I also use her I Know My Numbers pack: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/I-Know-My-Numbers-Math-Activities-251583">http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/I-Know-My-Numbers-Math-Activities-251583</a> As you can see, I love her stuff! Great graphics and material. <br />
Oh! In addition, I will start our Writer's Workshop this week with some incredible ideas from the lovely Mrs. Cara Carroll. Check out her post about Writer's Workshop here: <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/2011/08/writers-workshop-anchor-charts.html">http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/2011/08/writers-workshop-anchor-charts.html</a> In fact, tomorrow I will read The Best Story Ever by Eileen Spinelli and work with the students to make a WHY we write anchor chart. So excited to start Writer's Workshop from the beginning of the year this year. Last year, I was taking Teaching Writing K-12 in grad school, so I did not begin Writer's Workshop until February/March. Let me tell you tho, it is life changing. I pride myself in being a pretty good writer, so I wanted to instill that in my lils too. Unfortunately, our writing lessons were combined in our reading curriculum and not really great. I would supplement with guided writings, but once we began Writer's Workshop, my students' writing improved dramatically! I will have to make another post later explaining it more in depth. <br />
Well, it's getting late so I'm going to shut down here and watch the rest of the VMAs! How mind blowing was Justin's performance, by the way!!! :-D<br />

LOVE my new group of firsties!! They were SO well behaved, listened well, followed directions, etc. etc. Knock on wood ;) Really tho, they are a wonderful group. I'm very excited for this year and all of the new things I want to try. I think they will be able to handle it all well.<br />
Now, drum roll please........ Here are the classroom pics :) enjoy!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The door... love those paper fans in our classroom colors :)</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Entering the room... the blue round table is the word work/writing center and the two shelves behind it hold supplies like dictionaries, thesauruses, letters of all kinds (foam, magnets, tiles, stickers, etc.).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjktldV_ut7J3Ccv4BF-xM24YM9WRqDJXWXVVkKfTm5U8H-q14AeIUnmUpm9pxgXRuQdc7iu2EZyj8VHAUE85tdzEuvgS-m07U1YdEtBWIYbTifmDzDJjtYKEG_kuahktpWSigFPddSXjM/s1600/100_2250.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjktldV_ut7J3Ccv4BF-xM24YM9WRqDJXWXVVkKfTm5U8H-q14AeIUnmUpm9pxgXRuQdc7iu2EZyj8VHAUE85tdzEuvgS-m07U1YdEtBWIYbTifmDzDJjtYKEG_kuahktpWSigFPddSXjM/s320/100_2250.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the desk groups. There are 5 groups sorted by the cubby colors (purple, red, green, orange, blue) at the center of each desk grouping. They hold their crayon baggies, scissors, and glue. LOVE LOVE LOVE my new carpet with the squares labeled 1-25. I can do a carpet seating chart now. Woohoo no more fighting about who sits where... fingers crossed </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Better view of the word work/writing center. There is the pocket chart with all of their writing folders, labeled and ready to go. I have 5 crate seats that my mom and dad helped me make last year. They survived last year's lils and are still going strong. Great seats and storage! Highly recommend making them. I placed foam on top of a sturdy wooden board (a little over .5 in thick) and then stretched yellow vinyl over the top and stapled underneath. This is where I needed help. I stretched and held the vinyl in place while my dad used the staple gun to secure it. Lastly, I looped a ribbon and stapled it on the underside too. This makes it easier to lift the lid by pulling on the ribbon. Lots of posters ala the lovely blog ladies that I found on pinterest. <a href="http://www.zeekszoo.blogspot.com/2012/03/writing-posters.html">http://www.zeekszoo.blogspot.com/2012/03/writing-posters.html</a> and oh gees can't find the blog where the A Sentence poster came from... sorry! and the Bb Dd posters are from Mrs. Carroll <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/search/label/B%20and%20D">http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/search/label/B%20and%20D</a> The alphabet is above this board and the Word Wall above that. Quite a stretch to get those up there... :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwy4bS2BF8xZ8w3xmhxngD7UdLD6ed62qDrHzNZGc0MggIp6dyRJviRQr9jwucUyQW9X5i-SD5yHBLhNXiBQFBuwwxfdPB4o-h_-j0oNHV5ufxiMXv1IrCDs3p5RrV9Q9vBj4AeF0uJKA/s1600/100_2252.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwy4bS2BF8xZ8w3xmhxngD7UdLD6ed62qDrHzNZGc0MggIp6dyRJviRQr9jwucUyQW9X5i-SD5yHBLhNXiBQFBuwwxfdPB4o-h_-j0oNHV5ufxiMXv1IrCDs3p5RrV9Q9vBj4AeF0uJKA/s320/100_2252.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There's a better Word Wall pic! I have 2 computers for the kiddos to use. We only use them for playing educational games online (like starfall.com). The Star Student board is up and ready to go! I got those quote bubbles and stars from Pat Catans. They are felt and were quite tricky to hang and make them stay hung. Then you have my desk area (a mess right now in the pic :)). The Birthday Board is up behind my desk. I bought Erica Bohrer's Birthday Board pack <a href="http://ericabohrer.blogspot.com.es/search/label/Birthdays">http://ericabohrer.blogspot.com.es/search/label/Birthdays</a>. Can't wait to take their pics and post them on the board. It may get a little tricky tho because I have 2 sets of twins, one set of triplets, and 2 sets of students (not related) who are born on the same day! YIKES! Thank goodness she included blank number circles so I can write the repeated numbers. Whew! And last but not least for this pic is the listening center with the lime green table cloth.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here we have our mailboxes and math center area. LOVE these carpets. Got them from Big Lots. The colors go perfectly with the room. :) The shelves are sad and empty for now but will fill up with the buckets for math centers. Thinking of putting a Boggle math board on the radiator... hmmm. Got that amazing idea from....<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Boggle-Math-Boards-Mega-Pack-288469">http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Boggle-Math-Boards-Mega-Pack-288469</a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the leveled library that I made with our old reading series leveled readers. The yellow bucket holds our Phonics Phones that my mom and I made with PVC piping. The blue bin holds animal masks that the kiddos can use to help them focus on the words when they read at centers. We'll see how that works... it sounds fun but could quickly escalate to the land of sillies.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is our classroom library. Last summer my mom helped me sort ALL of the books into categories. Each bin has a label on the front and then every book in that bin has the same picture from the label in a smaller size taped to the top left corner. This system worked wonderfully last year. I didn't have to monitor it because the kids simply knew where to return the books. Hopefully, the system keeps going strong this year. LOVE my library! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the Boggle board (for making words). I have worksheets in the folder above the door and clipboards in the blue bin. The kiddos write down the words they make on the worksheet. I update the letters on the board about once a week when we learn a new sound. Our first sound is short a so that is why a is the only vowel. Also, you can see some paper and art supply storage and our religious table. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the math info area. It's across the room and diagonal from the math center carpet, but that's just how it had to be this year. The Gumball Math wall worked wonders for last year's firsties. They rocked their fast facts. To learn more about that amazing idea go here: <a href="http://www.madefor1stgrade.com/p/math-resources.html">http://www.madefor1stgrade.com/p/math-resources.html</a>. While pinteresting over the summer, I say this behavior chart and loved it so much more than the regular traffic light. I adore the fact that students can move up for good choices and even better and super behavior. My lils seemed pretty excited about it today, too, so hopefully it will do its magic. :) I got it here: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/clip-it-behavior-chart-675475">http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/clip-it-behavior-chart-675475</a> Oh, and you can see half of my SmartBoard. So blessed to have one. I use it every day along with an Elmo or document camera. Life changing tools.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is our morning routine area. We do calendar, the date, counting down to the 100th day, the number of the day, and the weather. Sorry it is kind of tough to see all of the neat things in this area but the kiddos were arriving in the hall and I was snapping pics real quick before they came in. It's hard to see but by the door are foam Die Cut hand prints. I write our vocab words on cards and tape them to the hands. They have to read and high-five a vocab word before they leave the room for a bathroom break, specials, etc. This was not my idea... again pinterest but I can't find the link... :/ Oh, and the Schema anchor chart above the colors came from here: <a href="http://fabulousinfirst.blogspot.com/2013/07/throwback-thursday-and-few-million.html">http://fabulousinfirst.blogspot.com/2013/07/throwback-thursday-and-few-million.html</a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
If you have not discovered wordle.net, you need to. It is the coolest site ever. You can make word collages of all kinds. Found this idea on pinterest which led me to this blog: <a href="http://www.thedigitalscoop.com/the_digital_scoop/2012/07/back-to-school-wordle-project.html">http://www.thedigitalscoop.com/the_digital_scoop/2012/07/back-to-school-wordle-project.html</a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Lastly, I made this lil craft over the summer. I got the frame and felt flowers from Michaels. I painted the frame green and wrote the words with Bic Metallic permanent markers. LOVE those things. We did not have time to take our pictures in the frame today, so hopefully we can do it tomorrow!</div>

Well that's it folks. I hope you enjoyed my pics and tour. As you can see, so many of you are an inspiration and all over my room. Thank you again! Here's to a GREAT school year! Now on to typing up the class rules we made today and my behavior plan so that the families know what's up. I should have done that before doing all of this, but I was excited to share with you. :)<br />

Well, I feel ya! I just do not feel prepared this year. I don't know if it was switching classrooms to the other side of the school, but I still have SO much to do and my lils arrive on Thursday! YIKES! Monday through Wednesday will be long days/nights at school for sure. I just bought and downloaded a whole bunch of goodies off of TpT, and they have me so excited to get this year rollin'! Well, I don't know when everyone starts but, great school year to you all. I'm off to write postcards to my lils so that hopefully they arrive before school starts! haha oops<br />

Oh my, I am just too excited right now as I write my FIRST post!! My name is Samantha Kearns, and I am a first grade teacher. <3 I absolutely LOVE what I do. Honestly, I do not know what I would be doing if I wasn't teaching. In fact, that is partly why I call myself a teachernerd (the # is there because I wrote #teachernerd a few times on my facebook statuses and it just kinda stuck). To me, a teachernerd is completely obsessed with all things teacher/school. I love to teach my littles, buy loads of school supplies and books, create interactive lessons/activities/centers/etc., buy loads of TpT lessons/activities/centers, read teacher blogs, pin teacher/school things, laminate, etc. I think you've got the picture. My fiance and friends also concluded that I am a teachernerd because if we won the Powerball with the ticket we all went in on together, I would be the only one who would continue working. :-D I'm proud to say that they were correct with that statement; I would just have WAY more money to spend on my classroom and littles. ;) Unfortunately, we did not win the Powerball, so all of the items on my wishlist will have to remain wishes...for now. <br />
Before I go any further, I need to thank a few people. First of all, thank you to the amazing Mrs. Cara Carroll over at <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/">http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/</a>. Yours was the very first blog I began reading/following my first year in first grade. You have been such an inspiration, truly, thank you. Then, Pinterest led me to a bunch of other awesome blogs, so in a way, thank you Pinterest! Also, thank you to all of the lovely ladies who write these blogs. Your advice, knowledge, and sharing have helped me grow as a teacher over the past two years. Lastly, a special thank you to the 3am Teacher, Ms. Michelle. <a href="http://the3amteacher.blogspot.com/">http://the3amteacher.blogspot.com/</a> Your most recent post about blogging came at just the right time for me, and your assistance with creating a hypertext link was so wonderful. Thank you (I'm saying this a lot. I need a synonym, gracias perhaps? I speak un poco Spanglish in my classroom so why not on here, right?!).<br />
Okay, so this begins my blogging journey. Buckle up for a crazy year! I will be teaching first grade (with a brand spankin' new reading and language arts curriculum), going to grad school in the evenings to finish up my Masters to be a Reading Specialist, and oh yeah, planning my (our) wedding!! Cray cray I say! (I like to rhyme, too.) So, tomorrow it is back to school I go to continue organizing/setting up my new room (we switched rooms this year to make space for a new 7th grade class). T-minus 8 days til my littles arrive (I'm counting the weekend too because you know I will fill up those days with planning and such.) I'm also noticing that I like parentheses as well...<br />
Alrighty, well good night (I'm not going to sleep until the end of this Buccos game, tho. Let's go Bucs!) and good luck setting up your classrooms!!<br />
